Lynton and Lynmouth is a picturesque coastal resort on the North Devon Coast. Perched on a plateau above the Glen Lyn Gorge, Lynton offers breathtaking views of the surrounding coast. The town sits high up on the cliff, providing a vantage point for visitors to take in the stunning landscapes. Nestled at the foot of the gorge is Lynmouth, where the West Lyn River and East Lyn River converge before meeting the sea. These two towns are connected by the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway—a multi-award-winning funicular railway that opened in 1890. It’s not only famous but also holds the distinction of being the highest and steepest totally water-powered railway in the world!
There is a plethora of boutique shops, museums, tourist attractions and eateries, as well as fantastic walking along the South West Coast Path and onto Exmoor. Whatever the weather, Lynton and Lynmouth have something for everyone and is well worth a visit.
Eating
There’s plenty to choose from including Spanish, Mediterranean and Thai offerings alongside more traditional English country fare. The Watersmeet Tearoom is excellent for a traditional Devonshire cream tea, and the Cliff Top café in Lynton offers spectacular views.

Situated just west of Lynton, it’s famous for its herd of goats, its geology and its stunning views. A dry river valley, it is believed to owe its existence to a former extension of the East Lyn River which now meets the sea at Lynmouth. Climb up Castle Rock and experience the feeling of being on top of the world as you gaze across the Bristol Channel. The valley extends on to the Lee Abbey Estate which has wooded walks, and a small lane leads down to Lee Bay, a sheltered sandy beach popular for kayaking and wild swimming.
